Abstract

Style is one of the most frequently invoked concepts in cultural and artistic studies, appearing widely in discussions across archaeology, art history, literary studies, and aesthetics. From the perspective of philosophical aesthetics, this lecture seeks to examine and clarify the often ambiguous uses of the concept of style. It also reflects on the validity of classic propositions associated with style—such as “style is the man” and “style is expression”—while attempting to uncover the philosophical history and intellectual foundations that underlie these claims.
