Spring Forum 2026 of PKU Institute of Foreign Philosophy: “Divergence” and “Convergence” of Analytic Philosophy and Phenomenology
Time: Fri 15 May 2026 09:00-17:45
Place: Science Lecture Hall, Zhongguanyuan Global Village, Peking University
Abstract:
Analytic philosophy and phenomenology both emerged in Europe around the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Their initial concerns overlapped to some extent, and they also had considerable interaction. Unfortunately, since the 1930s, the two traditions have gradually diverged. During this process, they have occasionally criticized one another.
In recent years, however, both abroad and in China, analytic philosophy and phenomenology have once again shown a tendency toward renewed interaction and convergence. Since the 1980s, the Peking University Institute of Foreign Philosophy has been a major center for the teaching and research of both analytic philosophy and phenomenology, having trained a large number of scholars in both fields in China.
In light of this, we have decided to hold a Spring Forum on May 15, 2026, themed ““Divergence” and “Convergence” of Analytic Philosophy and Phenomenology.” The conference invites leading scholars from various partner institutions, with the expectation that, through in-depth discussions among participants, we can jointly promote the integration of analytic philosophy and phenomenology in China.
