 PKU Centre for Philosophy and the Future of Humanity

 

Amid profound changes in the global landscape and social order brought by technological revolutions, the Centre for Philosophy and the Future of Humanity (CPFH) at Peking University (PKU) aims to make use of the university’s comprehensive multidisciplinary advantages to forge a research community integrating the humanities and sciences. Based on its rich accumulation in philosophy and other fields of humanities, the research centre is committed to reflecting on theoretical and ethical foundations of cutting-edge science and technology, foreseeing problems faced by human society in the future, and exploring possible solutions. 

Key Functions of CPFH: 

  • Inspire: Break disciplinary barriers and provide a platform for dialogue between philosophers, other humanities scholars and scientists.
  • Explore: Support problem-oriented exploratory research that integrates humanities and sciences.
  • Revitalize: Fully mobilize PKU’s existing multidisciplinary resources to incubate trans-disciplinary talents and teams.
  • Connect: Transform past accumulations in humanities research into theoretical resources to address future challenges.
  • Develop: Identify new frontiers of philosophy and humanities to stimulate reforms of related subjects at PKU.
  • Cooperate: Join hands with Peking University Berggruen Research Center and other relevant research centers at leading international universities, to forge an international academic community.

Initial Research Areas: 

  • Ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), genome engineering and other new technologies;
  • Interdisciplinary research centered around the concept of “intelligence”;
  • Interdisciplinary research centered around the concept of “life”;
  • Digital humanities research concerning philosophy and other humanities disciplines;
  • Participation in the formulation of the national ethical regulations of artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology
